“Mobilizing Generation Zero Hunger”

I was part of the panel of Youth Leaders at a United Nations General Assembly High-Level Side Event, which occurred on September 26, 2015 at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, U.S.A.

The High-Level panel included the President of the Republic of Ireland — His Excellency Michael Daniel Higgins, the President of the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Brazilian professional footballer Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite (popularly known as Kaká ), the Director General of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Principals of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, among others. The event was moderated by Femi Oke of Al Jazeera Media Network, at that time.

“Mobilizing Generation Zero Hunger” was the theme of the event. It focused on the adoption of the Post-2015 Agenda, which includes a Sustainable Development Goal to “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.” The event demonstrated how the youth are crucial to achieving this Goal.

She has held other leadership positions. Ukpeme is the Convener of The Peace Agenda. The Peace Agenda is a platform for strategizing sustainable agenda, and action for peace. The Peace Agenda Summit, which she organizes, comprises 17 speakers: Presenting Strategies for Achieving Both Personal and World Peace. Ukpeme is a member of Women, Peace and Security Network. She is a former Assistant General Secretary of International Federation of Women Lawyers, Abuja Branch. She has served on the Zero Draft sub-committee of Non-Governmental Organization / United Nations Convention on the Status of Women. Ukpeme is a past Secretary of the Abuja Chapter — Nigeria Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and was one of the 5 signatories to an application to establish the Abuja Chapter. She is the National Director - Administration of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) USA Chapter, and a member of other organizations. Ukpeme was awarded the title "Ambassador for Peace" by the Universal Peace Federation. She is a recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award as a Visionary Leader, Powerhouse Global Award — Justice for the People Advocate, Golden Role Model Award, and other Awards. A resource person, with papers and presentations to her credit, she has served as Rapporteur on various assignments, and was a panelist at a High Level event of the United Nations General Assembly. Ukpeme is desirous of leaving a legacy of peace, time consciousness, organizational excellence, team work and meritorious leadership. These are qualities she exhibited from ten years of age. After successfully acting as a mediator in a protracted difficult situation, she was referred to as "Peace Maker." This, and other related circumstances led to her determination to help people lead peaceful, transformational, fulfilled lives. Ukpeme has been writing since childhood. She recalls writing instructional notes as a child, and still has those writings. She also wrote songs as a child, which she self-tuned. She has held leadership positions since her teenage years, until now. She is musically known as UkpEmem. Ukpeme is a Rotarian - she is the Rotary International District 7620 Peace Fellows Committee Chair 2022-2023, as well as the Peace Committee Chair of Rotary Club of Rockville. Ukpeme takes pleasure in peacebuilding, music, mental wellness, culinary art, life coaching, nature, dancing, gardening, traveling and, volunteering.

    Within our challenge of the month our highly valued partner and Peace Maker Ukpeme Okon published this blog on her Peace Agenda. Zero hunger can be achieved through values driven cocreation and sharing. We challenge the youngest generations to step out of the doninance of a destructive food chain and develop our direct relationship with food again ourselves using our right for self determination and becoming self sufficient together.
